Harriet (Shaine) Schneider passed away peacefully at her home in Mountainside, New Jersey, on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the age of 97.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, she was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She later raised her own family in Bellmore, New York, lived in Manhattan, and spent time in the Renaissance Community of Monroe Township before settling in Mountainside in 2019. Throughout her years in New York City, she always looked forward to weekend getaways in the Berkshires.
Harriet was a kind and gentle soul whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She shone brightest when hosting large holiday gatherings for her extended family, traveling the world with her husband, Lou, or actively nurturing her three beloved grandchildren. Proud of her degree from Hunter College, Harriet began her career as a kindergarten teacher. After raising her children, she wore many professional hats: managing food stamp administration, owning a clothing boutique, bookkeeping for a bakery, and working in sales at Bloomingdale’s—where she likely spent more than she earned!
Harriet was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Lewis Schneider, in 2019, as well as her sisters, Anne Selkin, Lillian Koopersmith, Pearl Panes, and Eleanor Braverman. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Marc Schneider and his wife, Margaret, and Jill Hammarberg and her husband, Eric; and her three grandchildren, Stowe, Bryn, and Shaine, in addition to many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at the New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, Spotswood, New Jersey.
Donations honoring Harriet’s memory may be made to The Center for Dementia Research.
