Michael DeBlasi Obituary

Michael DeBlasi, 98, of Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Spotswood, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Danbury of Westerville, Westerville, Ohio.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Michael was raised in Newark’s Ironbound section, raised by his parents Carmen and Ida DeBlasi.  In 1965, he married Mary DiMartino and moved to Webster Street in Newark.  In 1977, he moved his family to Spotswood. He and Mary moved to Columbus, Ohio in 2024.  He was a devoted communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Spotswood. Prior to attending Immaculate Conception, he was a communicant and usher at St. Lucy’s in Newark for many years. Even after the family moved to Spotswood, Michael would volunteer at St. Lucy’s church during the Feast of St Gerard as well as their Christmas and Easter decorating.

Michael served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. For 35 years, he worked as a custodian for the City of Newark Board of Education while also working for 25 years as a security officer at the Essex County Courthouse, retiring from both in 1995. He enjoyed gardening, volunteering at St. Peter’s Hospital and the local food bank, both in New Brunswick, and traveling after his retirement. He was a self-taught handyman, building and repairing things around the house long before DYI became popular, and was always quick with a joke.

Michael was predeceased by his siblings and was the last of eight children born to Carmen and Ida. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary DeBlasi; his children, Marya DeBlasi, Michelle DeBlasi and her husband, Michael Nixon, and Michael DeBlasi and his wife, Nicole, and his grandchildren, Sam Nixon and Miles and Ella DeBlasi.

A Committal service will be held on Friday, August 29th at 12:30 PM at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 4th at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood.

In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Michael’s memory may be made to CancerCare.
